A veteran of the Barbados entertainment industry is tonight asserting that music piracy has reached unprecedented levels in the Caribbean.
With more than 25 years spent trying to make the music industry a vibrant one in Barbados, Mr. Barrow says the illegal selling of copyrighted property has forced many musicians to stop producing any material. He suggested a case in point is Trinidad and Tobago where a couple of artistes, including the world renowned calypsonians David Rudder, have refused to produce any work until drastic measures are taking to curb music piracy.
According to Mr. Barrow, many Barbadians, and others throughout the Caribbean seem to have the wrong concept of what constitutes piracy under the law.
Noting that an important problem facing the local music industry is getting people prosecuted for music piracy, Mr. Barrow contends there can be no development of the cultural industry unless some of these problems are put on the back burner.
He wants the local focus to be placed on music all year and not just on a seasonal basis during Cropover.
