Winchester?s 2004 soca hit ?Look De Band Coming? was played 255 times over Carnival Monday and Tuesday, leaving Destra Garcia in a distant second position with ?Bonnie & Clyde,? which was played 103 times.
A hoarse Winchester said his cellphone had been ringing non-stop, especially after the announcement of his win.
?I am very happy to give a gift to Tobago,? he said.
He said when he wrote the song he never did it with the intention of winning anything.
Performing the same song, Winchester placed second in the National Lottery Classic International Soca Monarch competition.
He was two points behind champion Bunji Garlin.
?I am feeling really good,? he said.
?I?m happy to know that I could move people with a fast song and now the Road March.
?Geez! I am very, very happy!
?Basically, I was known as Shurwayne, the man who sings the groovy songs, but with this song, God gave me the chance to prove that I can do a fast song.?
Winchester said he was thankful to all those who assisted him with the song, including Traffik, Sharon Pitt and Tony Chow Lin On.
?I need to thank the fans. A lot of people tend to forget the fans, but they are very, very important,? he said.
?When I was singing my song at the Savannah and I looked down at the people?s faces, only then did I really realise how much people enjoyed the song.?
Meanwhile, Traffik?s manager Andy Joseph said the band was excited over Winchester?s win.
?This is our first and everybody was looking forward to it. We really thought we had it,? he said.
?You know a song that will win the people. There was just that vibe.?
He said they were making plans to do something in Tobago.
Winchester has been with Traffik for eight years.
Joseph said: ?When I first heard Shurwayne sing people thought he had a light voice. I thought his voice was different, something I was looking for at the time.?
The new Road March King and his band members celebrated at their St James bandroom last night.
