KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) - Peter Cargill, a member of Jamaica's 1998 World Cup side, died in an automobile accident in St. Ann parish Saturday, police said.
Cargill, 41, received severe injuries when the minivan in which he was travelling, left the road and struck a boulder head-on.Cargill was travelling to Montego Bay where Waterhouse, the team he coached, was scheduled to play a league match on Sunday.
Constable Giles Watkins of the Discovery Bay Police said Cargill was pronounced dead at St. Ann's Bay Hospital about 7:30 p.m. He did not say if the minivan was speeding.
The driver of the minivan, Hugh Blair, another former Jamaica player, sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized. Delroy Satius, Cargill's assistant at Waterhouse, also sustained multiple injuries and was listed in critical condition.
A female passenger also survived but her suffered a broken collarbone.
Cargill was a versatile player who excelled in defence or midfield. After playing professionally for several years in Israel, he returned to Jamaica in 1996 and was called up to the Jamaica team which later qualified for the World Cup.
After retiring from the game, he was appointed assistant coach of the national team and later head coach of the under-23 team.
He is third Jamaica national player in three years to die in a road accident. In Dec. 2001, defender Steve Malcolm was killed in Trelawny parish hours after playing for the Reggae Boyz against Bulgaria.
In September, Winston Anglin, a midfielder who played for the team in the 1990s, was one of five people killed in St. Ann when their car swerved off a highway and crashed into a boulder.
