GEORGETOWN ? West Indies cricket captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul was honoured by Guyana?s president Bharrat Jagdeo during a ceremony sponsored by his local club Unity/Lancaster in his hometown of Unity on Thursday afternoon.
?I want us to never lose sight of what this young man has done. He has come from humble beginnings in a small village and has achieved the top position that anyone in his field could achieve,? the president said during the ceremony.The Guyana and West Indies captain recalled his days as a young boy growing up in Unity.
?I knew what I wanted to do and I knew it would not be easy. It would take a lot of hard work to get there. Day and night I was thinking about cricket,? Chanderpaul said.
?You had to be strong, and coming out of a village like Unity, you knew how to be strong,? he added.
Chanderpaul has played in 82 test matches and was selected captain of the West Indies team after star batsman Brian Lara was left out of the squad for the first test against South Africa in Guyana.
Chanderpaul has been appointed captain for the entire home series which comprises four Tests against South Africa and two against Pakistan.
