Deejay Vybez Kartel strongly believes in the phrase 'it wasn't me'. At least that is what he basically told the May Pen police on Saturday night.
Police say the deejay was stopped in May Pen after they received the reports about the gunshots which were reportedly fired during a disagreement between Kartel and the show's promoter. He was released after questioning. He was not charged.
Stopped and searched
"Actually, I left out of the session because the promoter never paid me," Kartel told THE STAR yesterday. "When I got to May Pen I saw a roadblock, the police stopped me and was searching me, until the point where it looked ... suspicious. They said they got a report that I shoot up dance and 'back' gun after the promoter but nothing like that go so."
The deejay also denied knowing who fired the gunshots.
"We drove to the station and they swabbed my fingers, and they just checked out the report they got that Kartel back out gun after promoter, and shoot up dance, but they see that it was nothing like that. I don't know nothing 'bout that. My car was the first to leave the venue from early."
The Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), the police information arm, reported that the disagreement centred about payments to the deejay. He is said to have refused to perform after he was not paid. Upon leaving the venue, the CCN said, a few angry patrons started to throw missiles at the deejay's vehicle as well as other cars that travelled with his.
Shots fired
During the stone throwing, shots were reportedly fired by unknown persons, and Kartel reportedly went to the May Pen police upon their request after being stopped on his way back home. After answering questions related to the incident, he left the station.
Superintendent Terrence Bent, who is in charge of the Clarendon police, could not confirm if shots were fired or who fired them, but told THE STAR that they are continuing investigations into what really happened at the session. He said that the swab results for the deejay are not yet complete, but they will keep in touch with him to help with their probe.
