A former security guard stood expressionless yesterday at Port-of-Spain Magistrate Court when the charge of murdering his month-old baby daughter was read to him.
By Geisha KowlessarSean Boyke, 32, of Prizgar Lands, Laventille, appeared before Chief Magistrate Sherman Mc Nicolls at the Eighth Magistrate?s Court.
Dressed in a grey shirt and black pants, Boyke sat in the dock with his head bent while waiting for the case to be called.
Mc Nicolls read to the court that Boyke had been charged with the unlawful killing of his daughter, Kimberly Boyke, on December 4.
He told Boyke the charge had been laid indictably and he was not called upon to plead.
The charge was laid by Cpl Irwin Fournellier of Besson Street CID.
Mc Nicolls told Boyke he had the right to apply to a justice of the peace for bail.
He asked Boyke if any relatives were in court, to which he replied he did not know.
A check indicated that no one was there.
When asked if he had retained a lawyer, Boyke said he had no money to do so.
Prosecutor Sgt Kenneth Cordner said by the next three hearings the State should be ready to proceed.
The matter was then adjourned to December 15.
It is reported that the baby?s mother, Jenelle Beroche, 17, also of Prizgar Lands, Laventille, told police she had left her daughter in a relative?s care on Saturday and went to a nearby shop to buy eggs.
When she returned home she noticed there was blood on the baby?s clothes and two wounds to the back of her head.
The baby was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
