Brian Lara, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo are amongst the players who have been left out of the West Indies squad due to visit Australia in January.
The captain and 15 further players were not considered for the trip, which will see West Indies face the hosts and Pakistan in the VB Series of one-day internationals, because of a contractual dispute.Vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, opener Chris Gayle and all-rounder Dwayne Bravo are among others who will miss out.
The dispute chiefly concerns 10 senior players, including Lara, who have endorsement deals with Cable and Wireless, a telecommunications competitor of Digicel, who recently signed a major sponsorship contract with the West Indies Cricket Board.
There could still be time for reconciliation, given that the tour is still some way off, and the West Indies players' association were meeting in Trinidad & Tobago on Wednesday to decide on the next course of action.
Players had until Tuesday night to sign a contract to take part in the triangular tournament and a training camp in Barbados from next Monday.
"The players who did not accept the invitation ruled themselves out of consideration for this tour," said the WICB.
"This does not prevent them from being considered in the future should they merit inclusion."
The cricket board had said previously that players are barred from endorsing "a competitor of a WICB major sponsor unless he has a pre-existing agreement with such a competitor that was approved in writing by the WICB".
The board and the players' association negotiated for almost 18 hours last week without a resolution.
New West Indies coach Bennett King, who arrived in the Caribbean on Tuesday night to assume his post, will chair the meeting to decide on replacements for the 16 'rebels'.
