Call them the ghetto messengers. They are Red Out, a local three-man reggae group that was brought together to enter the Revo-dub-a-lution competition, the semifinals of which will be held tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Ring Bang City, St Lawrence, Christ Church.
By Richard CaesarThe young artistes, Peter Hepburn aka Righteousness, Reuben Nelson aka Lil Shant and Troy Morris aka Attakka, although only together for about a month, have created quite a stir in the competition so far with their blend of positive lyrics and sweet melodies.
The group?s main song Practice Safe Sex primary focus is to ?enlighten the youth? about HIV/AIDS.
They said it was important that they got this message out given the severity of the problem locally and internationally.
?[HIV/AIDS] is a serious thing worldwide, and we need to get this across to the youth,? said Hepburn, who started the group. Hepburn also said the whole purpose of their song writing was to ?big up the minds of the people? using only positive lyrics.
The group said they were very confident about their chances in the competition, which they said was a great medium for the local reggae talent.
Hepburn said though they have only been together for a short time, they have meshed well and have a great respect for one another?s talent.
The trio said they see the Revo-dub-a-lution as a springboard from which they hope to launch a CD in the near future. They said they were doing recordings at Big Rock Studios and had to pay out of their own pockets.
?We are young and don?t have much sponsorship,? said Morris, ?but when it comes we?ll welcome it.?
The group has also been hitting the air waves. ?Respect to Hott 95.3,? said Nelson, ?they?ve really given us a chance?.
When asked about the name Red Out, Hepburn, known commonly as Popeye, said they ?just came to a conclusion on it.?
They said although it was early in their development, they were receiving very positive signs. ?Someone compared us to TOK,? Morris said, ?that was the best comment we?ve had?.
