PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP-CP) - Calgary's Stephen Ames has launched a foundation to help young golfers develop and raise the profile of the game in his native Trinidad and Tobago.
``The idea behind the foundation is to ensure continuity in the sport and to create opportunities for young golfers who otherwise might not be so fortunate,'' Ames said. ``I had that opportunity through my parents, but I know not too many others are so fortunate.''
Ames, ranked 21st in the world, said he was impressed by the talent on his native Caribbean island.
Ames said his initial foundation investment of $300,000 US will be used to bring in top coaches to teach local coaches the latest techniques. The foundation will also buy equipment, host clinics and help top players afford clinics abroad, Ames said.
``I always knew that there was great golfing talent and potential down here,'' said Ames, who became a Canadian citizen last December. ``This is my way of giving back to the sport that has been so kind to me.''
Ames's foundation will coordinate activities through the Trinidad and Tobago Golf Association. Ames said he was also working to get sponsorships from local organizations.
Ames will be the special guest of honour at a reception Tuesday at the St. Andrew's Golf Club, where he is to be inducted into the club's Hall of Fame.
He is also a top candidate for Trinidad's annual Sportsman of the Year Award, after winning his first career PGA Tour event - the Cialis Western Open in July - and finishing eighth on the Tour money list with over $3.3 million.
