The murder of 26-year-old Adi Alexander in San Juan on Friday has pushed the murder rate to 229, equalling last year?s total.

This is an increase of 37 murders, when compared with the same period last year.

With an average of two murders a day, and 54 days to go before the year ends, the homicide rate seems set to hit 300.

In addition, the number of murders solved by police has fallen, when compared with last year?s figures.

Yesterday, officers of the San Juan Police Station worked feverishly to discover a motive for Alexander?s murder.

Police said around 11 pm on Friday, Alexander, of Laventille Road, Febeau Village, was liming with friends.

Police said three men crept up behind the group and started shooting.

Alexander, police said, tried to run away, but collapsed in a drain a short distance from where he was shot.

Bleeding from his wounds, Alexander was rushed to Mt Hope Medical Sciences Complex, where he underwent emergency surgery.

He succumbed to his injuries around 7.15 am yesterday.

Police returned to the scene of the shooting yesterday morning and recovered several spent shells.

Alexander?s death came after six days of relative calm.

The last homicides reported were those of Guayaguayare construction worker Shane Louison and Maraval PH driver Larry Logie, who were killed in separate incidents on October 30.

Cpl Kitson is conducting inquires.
