Former road March Queen Faye-Ann Lyons got an early birthday present on Thursday night, when she copped three awards at the Copyright Organisation of T&T?s sixth annual Music Awards, at Queen?s Hall, St Ann?s.
Lyons, who celebrated her birthday yesterday, topped each category in which she was nominated to head the list of awardees on the night.
Her 2003 Road March hit, Display, earned her the titles of ?New Songwriter of the Year,? ahead of Troydon Cruickshank (Blazer) and Antiguan Shawn Oshea Ryan (Wanski); ?Female Songwriter of the Year,? over parang woman Francisca Allard and soca sensation Destra Garcia; and the coveted ?Song of the Year? title, ahead of Ian Wiltshire?s Trini 2 de Bone and Shurwayne Winchester?s D Band Coming.
?I never thought Display would have still been bringing me awards, but when the Lord say go, is to go,? a sedate Lyons said after the monumental achievement.
However, the sultry singer/ songwriter said she was hungry for greater achievement.
?I only just started climbing the ladder. I?m on the first rung and my ladder is very very long,? she said with a broad smile.
The show itself was impressive, except for the occasional time lapse and ill-timed curtain calls, as organisers attempted to duplicate the format of foreign music awards shows.
Cott president Christophe Grant said he was pleased with the increased airtime now afforded to local artistes on new radio and television stations.
However, Grant said he was disappointed at the lack of support shown by local law enforcement officers in his organisation?s fight against piracy.
?We will continue to wage a relentless war and keep a vigilant watch on the pirates that hawk our wares on the streets of the nation,? he said.
Fitzgerald Henry, known in the calypso world as Mighty Terror, received the Golden Achievement Award for his life?s work in music.
The late musician and composer Andre Tanker was posthumously awarded the Jazz/World Music ?Composer of the Year? ahead of Mungal Patasar and Michael Low Chew Tung (Ming).
