Sir Gary Sobers, widely regarded as cricket?s finest all-rounder, has been named technical consultant to the West Indies team, while Australian Bennett King will become the team?s head coach.
By Clive Wellington"Working with the team in an official capacity for the first time will give me another opportunity to give back to West Indies cricket a part of what it has given me," Sobers said.
King, head of the Australian Centre of Excellence, has signed a three-year contract, becoming the first foreigner in charge of the team. Tony Howard will remain as team manager.
The appointments were the first to be made within the revised structure of the West Indies team that was approved by the cricket board?s directors in Antigua earlier this month. West Indies Cricket Board chief executive Roger Brathwaite said others would be announced shortly.
Meanwhile, leg spinner Danish Kaneria took six wickets to leave Pakistan on the brink of a series-levelling win against Sri Lanka on the fourth day of the second Test in Karachi.
He tormented the batsmen and triggered the collapse, having Thilan Samaraweera caught at slip by Younis Khan. He then had Jehan Mubarak caught at leg slip off an inside edge for two and bowled Romesh Kaluwitharana for seven to swing the match Pakistan?s way.
