Soca: Saint Lucia Calypso Monarch 2004 is dead

St. Lucia's 2004 Calypso Monarch, Janny Williams is dead. The Calypso Queen was killed on Sunday morning when her car veered off the West Coast Road near Anse la Raye and plummeted off an embankment reportedly over 300 ft.

Williams first caught the attention of soca fans with the hit single ?Splash? in 2002.

She spent sometime in Trinidad and Tobago honing her craft as a singer and songwriter.

There were also unconfirmed reports that she was in talks to sign with a major record label.

Williams then returned to St. Lucia to capture the hearts and minds of the calypso fans and pundits with a riveting performance that sealed the 2004 Calypso Monarch title.

Today, members of the local calypso fraternity, in stunned disbelief, say Janny will be sorely missed.

Janny Williams was not only an entertainer but also worked hard to promote education and youth self-awareness across the Caribbean.

She helped formed the group Caribbean Visions which espoused the importance of education through out the region.

Williams, graduate of the St. Joseph?s Convent was also an avid netballer playing in secondary school?s competitions and for the Shamrock Netball Club.

The enigmatic performer?s latest venture was a Charity concert for the Hurricane Stricken Island of Grenada. The benefit concert was endorsed by Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony who today expressed profound sadness upon hearing the news of the Calypso Queen?s death.

Janny Williams was 26 years old.
