Diego Martin West MP Dr Keith Rowley is appealing to residents in the Carenage area who may have information about the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Sherman Monsegue to cooperate fully with the police investigators.

He said yesterday that the only way to determine if the police acted outside of the law in the shooting death of 17-year old Monsegue last Wednesday is through a "thorough investigation".

Monsegue, of Schuller Street, was shot twice in the head and killed by officers of the Western Division Police Station.

Residents claimed that the officers are "rogue cops" who killed Monsegue in cold blood.

Monsegue's friend, Kurt Holder, who was with him at the time of the shooting, has confirmed the cold blooded killing and he has denied police reports that Monsegue was armed.

Monsegue was laid to rest at the Carenage Cemetery last Wednesday following an emotionally charged and tense funeral service and procession through the streets of Carenage.

Following the burial, dozens of soldiers and police officers had to be called out after residents staged a fiery protest and road blockade. Burning tyres and debris on the Carenage Main Road, residents got into verbal confrontation with the lawmen as they cried out for justice.

Commissioner of Police Trevor Paul has ordered an investigation into the shooting, and the report is to be completed and handed over by October 31.

Yesterday, Rowley, who has been in touch with the Monsegue family, said "the loss of life of any person under any circumstance is very troubling and very tragic and while the police have a very difficult job to do, in dealing with the criminal element in the country, we also have to be satisfied that when they act, they act legally, reasonably and properly".

He said "the only way we can determine that this is the case, is to have a thorough investigation.

"I look forward to this and I ask residents who may have information to cooperate fully with the police.

"It is imperative that we get to the bottom of the matter so that we can be comforted that the policemen are doing their duty, while at the same time, not acting outside of the law," he added.
